Safety sensors

The small eyes that stop the door

Every modern opener has two photo-eye sensors near the floor, one on each side of the door. They send an invisible beam across the opening. If anything breaks the beam, the door must stop and reverse. That is a federal safety requirement, and it protects kids, pets and cars.

When the sensors are knocked out of line, dirty, wet or have a damaged wire, the opener thinks something is in the way and refuses to close. Often the light on one sensor blinks or is off.

Quick checks you can try

  • Wipe both lenses with a soft cloth
  • Make sure nothing is blocking the beam
  • Check that both sensor lights are steady, not blinking
  • Look for a loose or chewed wire along the wall

If the door still will not close, we realign the sensors, repair the wiring or replace them, and test the safety reverse before we leave.

Signs of a sensor problem

  • Door reverses just before closing
  • Door only closes while you hold the wall button
  • Sensor light blinking or off
  • Opener light flashes when you try to close
  • Sensor bracket bent or loose

Questions

Safety Sensors FAQ

Why does my garage door go back up?

Most often the safety sensors are misaligned, dirty or blocked. It can also be a door that needs its close-force or limit adjusted.

Can I bypass the safety sensors?

No. They are a required safety feature that prevents the door from closing on people, pets and cars. We repair or replace them instead.

Do sensors come with a new opener?

Yes. New openers include matching sensors, and we install and align them as part of the job.

Can sunlight affect the sensors?

Yes. Strong low sun shining straight into a sensor can confuse it. Moving the sensors to the other sides or adding a shade usually fixes it.
